Senior Women's
3.0 Update
by Kacey Karmendy, Captain
The Senior Women's 3.0 team is off to a great
start this season -- after nine matches, the team has a 7-2 record,
and is trailing the first place team by only one win! However, we have
a grueling 15-match season, so we still have to play six more matches
between early January and February. The rain gods have not smiled on
us, as we have had three rainouts so far. But, our spirits remain high
and we are looking forward to more good tennis in the New Year. Thanks
to Rosemary, Lynda, Karen, Dania (how's the knee?), Patti, Mimi, Marcia,
Mary, Gemma, Marie, Cathy, Pat, Vikki, Maureen, Nancy and Phyllis for
your dedication and support!

Leo Ryan
Park Mixed 8.0 Update
by Clarke Nelson, Captain
The Foster City Mixed 8.0 Team which was resurrected
after a winless 0-9 Season three years ago by then Captain and now current
Club President Richard Olson, bids for its 3rd consecutive year
to represent the Foster City Tennis Club at District Championships in
Alameda. On the franchise's path to greener pastures, Richard Olson
passed the baton on over to Clarke Nelson in 2002 and his 2003-04
Mixed 8.0 squad is currently sitting in 2nd place at 7-2 and is heading
for a showdown for 1st Place @ Pacific Athletic Club on January 4th
for 1st Place in the Mid-Peninsula Division in its final Match of the
Regular Season.
A triumph over PAC on January 4th will not only
give us the League Title but it will also enable Leo Ryan Park to gain
Home Court advantage all throughout the Local League Playoffs, which
will most likely mean playing the Championship game vs. William Wu's
havily favored Canada College outfit of sandbagging talent here at Shell
Courts in Foster City.
Leo Ryan Park has been led in 2003-04 by the
surprising Bruce McTigue, who was a mere understudy during the
Olson years, but who has since emerged into prominence in the current
Season by amassing an 8-0 Record in USTA League Play. The unusual
combinations of 3.5 men playing with 4.5 women has been golden for Captain
Nelson, as the hot-shot quintet of Karen McNamara, Shannon Costello,
Jackie Thomas, Nancy Farrell, and Kelly Lynch have gone a
combined 14-1 in League play proving that Mixed Doubles success
is primarily a function of female power.
Will Leo Ryan Park make it all the way to Districts
for the third consecutive Season, and if so, how far will this year's
8.0 Team go after that? The stage will soon be set for exciting Playoff
action come this early March at the newly renovated Shell Courts.
If you want to see dramatic and thrilling USTA
Playoff action, come out to see the Mixed 8.0 Team defend its Mid-Peninsula
League Title in mid-March and further bestow honor and glory upon the
Foster City Tennis Club.

7.0B Mixed
Doubles Team Update
by Vikki Mion, Captain
It has been an interesting season for our team.
We had a rocky start, with several of our team members, also playing
on Combo Doubles League Teams (availability problems), but we overcame
that problem. Then Mothernature hit us were several rained-out matches....
Despite, these bumps in the road, we are alive
and doing well, and it is all due to our outstanding team members: Joe
Borzello, Wendy Chute, John Hayes, Melanie Hibbs, Rose Janisch, Jin
Jue, James Layton, George Mena, Clarke Nelson, Lily Owyeung, Mike Saberi,
Erin Stockford, Ram Venkatesan, Mark Wong, Mindy Wong, Randy Wong, Kenny
Woo, and Amy Zhang.

Women's
5 .5 Combo Team Update
by Kathleen Pender, Captain
The FCTC's first 5.5 women's combo team had a
winning season, finishing second and going to the local playoffs, where
we lost to undefeated Half Moon Bay. Our team included almost everyone
from the club's 2.5 team, and players from each of the 3.0 teams. Speaking
for the 2.5 players, we loved the coaching, competition and camaraderie
we got from the 3.0 women, who managed to hardly ever laugh at our blown
serves and over-the-fence shots.
The players included Rita Armstrong, Debbie
Babbitt, Mei Cao, Rose Carney (who had to ease up after she found out
a little Andre or Steffi is on the way), Hanming Chen, Bae Cheng, Kathryn
Chou, Evie Felton, Beatriz Garcia, Holland Kensington Routt, Laurie
Leong, Vivian Li and captain Kathleen Pender.
Although Kathryn and Evie were our winningest
team-mates, the "Never Say Die Award" goes to Mei and Beatriz, who battled
back from deep deficits in two sets to win a match that had to be won
to put us into the playoffs.
A special thanks to Evie, my unofficial co-captain
and strategist, and to Vikki Mion, for dreaming up the team.

Senior
Men's 3.0 Update
by Steve Tutt, Captain
The Senior Men’s 3.0 team is on a roll toward
the playoffs! With a 6/5 record we are now in 4th place but not quite
locked in at the time of this writing. In spite of our injury plagued
roster we have managed to post convincing wins against the #2 and #3
teams in the second round of regular league play and lost a close squeaker
to the #1 team from San Carlos Tennis Club. We hope not to repeat that
performance in the playoffs.
We have a 20 man roster so I won’t list everyone
but our record is posted at http://www.ustanorcal.com/teaminfo.asp?id=18816.
We have a great bunch of guys with a super competitive spirit, great
attitude and a lot of camaraderie. We’re doing our best to bring the
league championship home to Foster City.

Senior Women's
3.5 Update
by Judy Olson, Captain
The Leo Ryan Senior Women 3.5 team is happily on
a roll, on its way to local league playoffs. With one match to go, the
team has the great record of 8-2, which puts us in the # 2 spot. Our last
match is against the # 1 team, San Francisco Tennis Club. We hope to upset
them, take them down a notch and secure our home court advantage for the
local league playoffs. Stay tuned for results of this match and the playoffs
which are scheduled for March, 2004. Way to go, team!
