Issue 21: Spring, 2008
The Foster City Tennis Club sponsors many teams
and we have written many stories to share our team experiences with
the club. For prior issues, please check out our archive.
Senior Women's
3.5 Team
by Barby Pickett, Captain
Our Season started off on a rather rocky start,
with injuries, illnesses, and availability problems putting us in last
place.
This may have discouraged some, but not the joint Captains (Vikki Mion
and Barby Pickett) nor our outstanding Team Members. Galynn Brady, Louisa
Bussing, Cheryl Butts, Kathleen Cammarata, Lisa Chang, Karen Chew, Janice
Coakley, Patty Coulson, Olive Ebert, Helen Kishi, Dora Kreidl, Shaun
Lenihan, Pearl Leung]Gima, Joyce Madeira, Kathy Rudovsky, Regina
Spadarella, and Scarlett Wood.
"Onwards and upwards" was our motto. And with that
said: match by match our Team moved up position by position to finish
the Regular Season at #1.
We all had an exciting Regular Season and look forward and are all fired
up to kick booties in the next 2 rounds of Local League Playoffs. Then
head onwards to Sacramento to represent the Foster City Tennis Club
at Districts and onwards.

Senior 3.5
Guys Claw Into Local Playoffs
by Jake Karmendy, Captain
The Senior Men's 3.5 team has scratched and clawed
its way into Local Playoffs. The playoff picture was undecided until
the last week of the regular season when the guys came through when
it mattered most to capture the last remaining playoff berth. The team,
captained by Jake Karmendy and Wil Dang, will face undefeated Red Morton.
Led by stalwarts James Kiehl and Ed Cruz, the team included grizzled
veterans Tony Durfor, Mitch Tom, Jin Jue, Alan Hall, Victor Luscap,
Adolf Kreidl, Chuck Lumia, Al Briones, Rich Zaro and Ben Asaro as well
as young bucks Tony Lolong, Bruce Klafter, Paul Catalli and Rich Martyn.
The bookies have given the FCTC team very long odds against powerful
Red Morton
a bit like the Giants had against the Patriots in
the Super Bowl..

Mixed 7.0 Team
Lumbers Their Youth To Local Playoffs
by Barby Pickett, Captain
The mixed 7.0 team is headed to the 2nd round
of local playoffs. With a 14-1 record, the team ranging in age from
20 - 60 years old, hats hanging in Mountain House, Petaluma, South San
Francisco and Palo Alto is having fun winning and practicing together.
We stand firmly in 1st place in all of NorCal and after sweeping the
very strong Red Morton B team on March 9th in the 1st round of local
playoffs, we now need to bring our strength together to beat the #3
place Beresford team. (The "1" next to the 14-1 was our loss to Beresford
during regular season.).
Our great mother-son, brother-sister, brother-brother and husband-wife
team consists of Kathryn Chou, Sheila Cooper, Allison Don, Helen Geer,
Glen Hernandez, Jake Karmendy, Stewart Kerr, Jo Lim, Henry Lin, Paul
Lin, Cathy Lin, Barby Pickett, Jeremy Pickett, Dale Russell, Jenille
Tan, Jobie Tan, Martin Uiberlacker, and Ken Wanzer.
We are all anxious to move on to Districts at Stanford if we beat Beresford
on March 30th at 2 PM, at Edgewater. Come to the 2nd round playoff match
and we will share a mimosa and sandwich for a FCTC cheer.

Senior Women's
3.0 Team
by Kacey Karmendy, Captain
What an exciting season we have had! We traveled
from San Francisco down to Sunnyvale over the course of 14 matches.
And the final standings went down to the very last match!! Our team
ended up in third place (having spent one whole week early in the season
at #1!), and will be heading once again down to Sunnyvale to try to
bring home one more victory. While the team that ended up in first place
was pretty much in that position most of the season, our team handed
them their only two losses!
Thanks to Maria, Roz, Dania, Patti, Rikko, Marji, Mary, Gemma, Marie,
Marion, Sam, Ushio, Maureen, Po. Kathleen, Fumi, Phyllis, and most of
all, my co-captain Marcia. You all played like troupers, giving it your
all in each and every match. Regardless of how the rest of the season
goes, it's been a fun and exciting season, and you all are a great bunch
of ladies. I look forward to playing with you all in upcoming seasons.
