The Foster City Tennis Club sponsors many teams
and we have written many stories to share our team experiences with
the club. For prior issues, please check out our archive.
Senior
Women 4.0 Team is on their way to Nationals!!
The Senior Women 4.0 team is on their way to
Nationals!!! After tying their flight at Sectionals, losing out to a
percentage decision and then winning their way into the semi's by another
complex way of figuring sets lost or something, Liz team won the semi's
and then turned around and won the finals, beating a team who had beaten
them in their flight - so, you can see why they are thrilled and excited
to be going to Palm Springs in October for the Nationals! Warm, hearty
congratulations to Liz Titus' team!
Note from Liz Titus, Captain:
The third time really is a charm! We had been
to sectionals twice before in Napa, and this year found us in Fresno!
After very tough games in our flight -- Thursday, Friday, and Saturday,
we emerged victorious. It was onward to the semis on Sunday morning
at 11:30. We were scheduled to play the club team (Sierra Sports and
Tennis Club, Fresno) and they had lots of local support, but we kept
our eyes on the ball and darned if we didn't do it again -- WIN, that
is!
The day was getting hotter and so, of course,
were the courts, but were back and the club at 4:30 to do battle with
Marin Tennis Club in the finals. We won the first position, lost the
third, so it came down to the second team, who won the first set and
fought hard in the second set -- but then so did the other team. It
came down to a tie break -- we were cheering and breathless all at the
same time. Our team pulled it off amid much shouting, jumping up and
down and cheering. We had finally done it -- we are off to Nationals
in October!
Many, many thanks to Jane Bagley, Galynn
Brady, Kathleen Cammarata, Karen Cano, Suzanne Chow, Nancy Farrell,
Katarina Kivel, Kumiko Nishikawa, Bev O'Rourke, Maya Oda, Lisa Strait,
and Scarlett Wood.

Mariners
end their Season in 2nd Place!
The Mariners, Foster City's "A" level
women's team (in the Peninsula Tennis League's Wimbledon "A"
division) had a great year. After being barely edged out by the Burlingame
Stars in a very tight race, the Mariners ended the year in 2nd position
thanks to the leadership of our Captain, CB Houston, and her Co-Captain,
Kerry Edwards.

1-6 But Moving Up (Men's 3.5)
The new 3.5 Mens Team, a fairly motley collection
of characters whose one compatible interest is tennis, took a giant
step forward with a match win over Highlands on June 9. Prior to that,
this new team had gone 0-6, realizing that what they were gaining was
some valuable USTA experience along with the bruised egos. Everybody
is contributing to
the turnaround, but those scoring match wins were Fred DeSauvage, Kai
Wiedman, Bill Ribble, Albert Chan, Larry Lowenthal and Jake Karmendy.
The guys are confident there's more to come.

Challenging
Season (Women's 3.5)
The new Spring season started with a team of
19 players; some from last year and some nice additions to the team.
Playing in the mid-peninsula area has brought us better tennis matches
to help improve our tennis game. However, nothing beats the challenge
that we have been faced with at the windy courts at Bowditch. It's too
bad that the wind hasn't really surprised our opponents; they have persevered
under those conditions taking us to deciding matches ending in three
sets. We have had better luck playing away in Palo Alto, so we need
to work on figuring out how to play in the wind to our advantage. Our
singles players are: Betty Lam, Linda Hayashi, Lisa Hing, Leila Gray,
Stephanie Perry, and Becky Ann Hughes. Our doubles players are: Janet
Chan, Josephine Chew, Kerry Carranza, Cheryl Chang, Rosemary Bardi,
Jessie McElroy, Jackie James, Jane Reynolds, Marsha Todd, Nancy Day,
Sheryl Thirlwall, Mona Simpson, Stephanie Perry, Shirley Foster, and
Lisa Chang. Unfortunately, we have been plagued with injuries on the
team, and we are sorry that Shirley and Leila are not able to play tennis
for the rest of the season. We hope to see them on the courts again
soon!

Men's Tennis
Stars (Men's 4.5)
The FCTC Men's 4.5 USTA team ended the regular
season undefeated with a 7-0 record playing in the always tough San
Francisco league. It has been a total effort with many players contributing
to our success. I wish to thank everyone for their efforts in securing
us the all-important home court advantage during the local league playoffs.
Now the real season begins. We will face the San Francisco Tennis Club
A-Team mid-July in the first round of playoffs.
