FCTC 7.0 Mixed Doubles -- NorCal's Best

by Jake Karmendy, Mxd 7.0 Captain

The Club’s 2006 7.0 Mixed Doubles team is on its way to Nationals, a feat it just missed by mere Super-Tiebreaker points a year ago. See pictures. This time Foster City’s entry into the 7.0 Mixed Doubles wars was not to be outdone. On its way FCTC defeated teams from Fresno, Walnut Creek and Benicia at Districts and Reno, Bay Trees and Fremont at Sectionals. The 3-0 victory over Clubsport Fremont was particularly gratifying, not only because they are a nemesis team, but more importantly because that victory determined NorCal’s representative at Nationals.

Actually the team worked hard just to get to out of Local Playoffs. Two Upper Peninsula opponents, both from Beresford Park, presented stiff competition. In fact, Beresford-A handed FCTC its only match loss last November during regular season, but that was turned around in March. The strong local competition only served to forge a hardened team going into Districts.

Please congratulate all the team members when you see them. On the distaff side – Ashley Chen, Lisa Hing, Cecilia Sharer, Allison Don, Cathy Chang, Cheryl Chang, Kieu-Nhi Le and Nancy Kane really made the difference in strength of game and depth of lineup. The guys – Jason Yang, Henry Lin, Paul Lin, Srini Subramanian, Sean Ha, Jeff Roodman, Jim Chen and Jeff Burgos were alternately powerful and quick but always versatile.

The formula for success was pretty simple. Team Captains Jake Karmendy and Ashley Chen recruited strong players who are also nice people, found the right pairings, and fanned the flames of enthusiasm during this extraordinary season.

Wish this team “Good Tennis” for its date at Nationals in Las Vegas.

Senior Women's 3.5B Team

by Vikki Mion, Captain

This was our 2nd year as a Team, with our 1st year (2004-05) making it into Local League Playoffs.

This year (2005-06) we had a long (August thru April) and successful season, which was due to the dedication and support of everyone on our Team. Before our Regular Season started, we set our goal and it was to make it to Districts. This meant non-stop Team Practices. We practiced religiously - in the wind, rain, and cold weather, and our hard work paid off.

In our Regular Season, we had to play each Team twice. The top 3 Teams that ended up in the Local League Playoffs were tied on the number of Team wins/losses and only the individual wins/losses and Set losses, which were only about a 1 point spread - determined the #1, #2, and #3 positions. During the Regular Season these 3 Teams took their only match loss against each other. Having to play these 2 other Teams again in the 1st and 2nd round of Local League Playoffs was real nail biting. But the dedication and hard work paid off because we achieved the honor of representing FCTC at the Districts. This was the 3rd year that a FCTC Senior Women's 3.5 Team has represented our Division at Districts - the previous 2 years, Judy Olson's Senior Women's 3.5 Team (our sister team and 1 of the top 3 Teams we had to play in Local League Playoffs) has represented our Division at Districts.

We finished 2nd in our flight at Districts, which was held this year at Stanford (not Carmel), and the weather was absolutely beautiful and the commute was ideal.

Many thanks to our outstanding team members, who gave their all (100% plus) in the Regular Season, Local League Playoffs, and Districts --- Cathy Urban, Dixie Ruland, Dora Kreidl, Janet Adams, Joan Prack, Judy Prothro, Karen Chew, Marie Wong, Marlys Ludlow, Olive Ebert, Patty Coulson, Rosemary Bardi, Sharon Salomon, and Wendy Lee.

Particular thanks to Barby Pickett, who along with me shared the Captain's responsibilities.

The 2006-07 Senior Women's 3.5 Season will be starting within a few months and we, the Ever-Ready Bunnies, shall return to once again -------------- work hard, have fun, and KICK BOOTIES!!!
