Team Stories
Issue 15: Summer, 2005
The Foster City Tennis Club sponsors many teams
and we have written many stories to share our team experiences with
the club. For prior issues, please check out our archive.
Men's 4.5 Team at Sectionals
by Justin Lu, Captain
It was a terrific weekend down in Carmel-- great
weather, quality tennis and plenty of supporters rooting us on. We played
well, defying many predictions of a last place finish. However, we fell
just short of nationals, finishing in 2nd place with a 2-1 record.
A quick recap: we started out strong on Friday,
beating Berkeley 3-2 via an impressive doubles sweep. That set the stage
for a Saturday showdown with Seascape, which had also won its Friday
match. Seascape, though, was by far the best team we've played all season
and is loaded at doubles (they didn't lose a doubles match all weekend),
and we lost 4-1. We bounced back on Sunday, however, taking down perennial
power Sun Oaks 3-2 courtesy of another doubles sweep to clinch 2nd.
Seascape won again on Sunday as well to finish 1st and will be representing
Norcal at 4.5 nationals.
A few thank yous: thanks to everyone-teammates,
friends and family- who came down to Carmel to root us on...we had by
far the most vocal support of all the 4.5 teams. Thanks to Marcos and
Zalles for the Foster City team t-shirts. And thanks to all on the team,
whether you were in Carmel or not, for your contributions this season...finishing
2nd in all of Northern California ain't too shabby.

Men's
3.5 Team at Sectionals
by Ramkumar Venkatesan, Team Member
We had a sensational run this year with the Men's
3.5 Team...
The great thing is that sensational part was
not planned ahead of time. The team was formed by a group of people,
who play regularly at the Shell Public Courts. We were fortunate
enough to be playing tennis at such courts with such great people. It
is arguably the best place to enjoy tennis in the Bay Area. Incidentally,
we were the only team that represented the Public Court enthusiasts
at Sectionals in the Men's 3.5 division.
The team had all the necessary ingredients: good
talent, great attitude, even greater support for each other, and an
enthusiastic and ever present Captain. Everything else just fell into
place.
Many already know that we missed the Nationals
by a point. However, we had won thousands of points during the regular
season. With those points, came thousands of fond memories. On any day,
I will take those fond memories, in lieu, of a nationals berth by any
means. One could say that we were hooked in one of the matches. As one
teammate noted, "It is easy to win another match, but it is not easy
to win back respect". Everyone on the team played true to that sentiment.
This was our first season together in Men's 3.5
and 4.0 and we hope to take the same spirit and love for tennis into
our Men's Combo 7.5 and 8.5 Season.

Women's
6.5 ComboTeam
by Lisa Chang, Captain
The Women's 6.5 Combo Team was formed in August
following the long adult season. The team has new faces and we have
worked hard to get to know each other's playing styles in a short time.
As we approach mid-season, we are identifying strong pairings for us
to rise to the challenge of our opposing teams in our flight. We have
the depth and determination to focus on earning us a spot in playoffs
at the end of the season.
My lovely teammates are: Catherine Chang, Kathryn
Chou, Cynthia Gin, Betsy Holak, Joan Holland, Jackie James, Dora Kreidl,
Mary Liu, Theresa Lockwood, Ashley Nguyen, Kitos Olano, Stephanie Perry,
Liz Saura, and Hanming Chen.

Senior
Women's 3.0 Team
by Kacey Karmendy, Captain
With many familiar faces and some new ones, the
Senior Women's 3.0 team is looking forward to a fun and successful season.
At the conclusion of team registration, we found ourselves with no opponents
in the Upper Peninsula division. That's one way to assure a place at
Districts! However, USTA Norcal didn't see it that way, and we had to
choose to go North (San Francisco division) or South (Mid-Peninsula
division). (Funny, I would have thought Foster City was in the middle
of the peninsula!) After much soul searching, the team voted to go south
for better weather, although by doing so we put ourselves in a more
competitive group. We think we will be up to the challenge! Bring on
Sunnyvale Tennis Club, University Club, et al. Dania, Patti, Marcia,
Mary, Joan, Gemma, Marie, Pat, Cathy, Marion, Sam, Mimi, Maureen, Po,
Fumi, Phyllis, Yvonne and I will certainly give them a run for their
money! We'll let them know we came to play tennis!!
