Peninsula
Challenge Cup Highlights ...
by Dale Russell, PCC Director
On one of the hottest June weekends on record,
the 2008 Peninsula Challenge Cup played out over 3 days and was deemed
a grand success by players and spectators!
The tournament hosted a record number of entrants
(158) who participated in 135 matches held at the Edgewater, Boothbay,
and Shell courts arriving from as far away Gilroy, Mill Valley, Berkeley,
Santa Cruz, and Sacramento! Competition was held in 15 levels from 3.0
to 4.5 including Men's and Women's singles and doubles, and Mixed.
Edgewater Park, the new home for Club activities,
was the site of tournament headquarters. Members and staff celebrated
the convenience of the newly constructed green and white storage shed,
and on Saturday we christened the club's new gas grill with a hamburger
and chicken BBQ for volunteers and fans.
Our wonderful volunteers were the hallmark of
our successful tournament! Coordinated by Scarlett Wood, they worked
tirelessly and met every challenge with a smile. Players received a
tournament t-shirts/tank tops, bottled water, and fresh fruit. Bob Wood,
Ed Weiss, and Vivian Poblete, helped run the Club BBQ on Saturday to
great reviews. Our USTA Officials, Wendy Chow and her umpire staff Shaun
Lanihan and Ali Estragh were outstanding. Jake, our smiling president,
kept each court site fully stocked of water and ice throughout the warm
weekend. And Olive Ebert was a welcomed site when she arrived with late
Friday with pizza for the volunteers!
Gust Zumas and Jackie James did their usual great
job managing the Boothbay courts, while Karen Chew and George Porzio
kept Friday organized at Shell, as did Sheila Cooper on Sunday. The
hub of action at the tournament desk was wonderfully staffed by Chris
Mangar, Suzanne, Janet, Steve, Vivian, and others (as long as they kept
the Tournament Director out of their way, the operation ran smooth!!)
Lisa Chang, Mona Simpson, Jim Bjorge, and Betty Lam provided seasoned
help for the weekend too.
The FCTC Board of Directors; Vikki, Mona, Ken
and Ken, Barby, and even Richard Olsen, were seen during the event lending
help where needed. Other great volunteers included Sheryl, Steve, Judith,
Suzanne, Stephanie, Joan, Chris, and Mike who helped run our successful
show!
Competition ran well throughout the tournament
with minimal delays or complaints. Winners and finalists received engraved
wine glasses at the end of the competition. Our goal next year is to
continue the long successful history of the Peninsula Challenge Cup!
Thanks to all for another great PCC!

Thank You to the Volunteers ...
by Dale Russell, PCC Director
We survived another 3-day PCC! 158 Players, 135
matches, 14 events, 3 sites, and 22 cases of water!
Nice job!
I want to graciously thank and congratulate all the
FCTC Volunteers for their long hours and personal
effort in making the 2008 Peninsula Challenge Cup a
grand success! I have received many compliments that
our tournament ran smoothly, and that our volunteer
staff was very friendly and helpful. A special thanks
to Scarlett Wood, our 2008 PCC Volunteer Coordinator,
who organized and staffed our event!
Our continued success is attributed to your
outstanding work as great volunteers! All your many
hands of help made the 2008 PCC a pleasure to manage.
Thank you!
Our USTA Officials, Wendy Chow, Shaun Lenihan, and Ali
Estragh provided friendly and professional service to
our tournament, we are in deep appreciation of their
effort and their tennis knowledge! Great job!
Thanks to the FCTC Board in approving and purchasing
our new gas grill! Our BBQ Pro's, under guidance of
Bob Wood, christened the grill and declared it
'burger' ready! Thanks also to Jake Karmendy, our
president, for the many early morning runs to all the
courts for ice, water, and supplies; we thank your
pickup too!!
Thanks also to Kevin Miller, Manny Hernandez, and Todd
Badger, our Foster City Officials, who provide the
wonderful tournament venues, and were instrumental in
approving and installing our new storage shed at the
Edgewater Courts just in time for the first PCC match!
I have probably missed a few folks that helped out
too. Please thank them for their help and support.
Thanks again for your contribution to the 2008 PCC!
