Peninsula Challenge Cup 2007

The Foster City Tennis Club hosted the Peninsula Challenge Cup 2007 the weekend of June 22-24, 2007. For prior years, please check out our archive.

Peninsula Challenge Cup Highlights ...

by Dale Russell, PCC Director

The 2007 Peninsula Challenge Cup, from most all accounts by players, spectators, and volunteers, was a great successful 3-day event! The Club, in conjunction with the City of Foster City, hosted 15 public courts at three sites. We ran 17 levels for 129 players in 3.0 to 4.5 including Men’s and Women’s singles and doubles and Mixed. We had players from as far away Gilroy, Mill Valley, Berkeley, Half Moon Bay, and Los Gatos!

The tournament weekend was kicked off with FCTC Grand Opening of the newly renovated courts at Edgewater Park! President, Barby Pickett, Vice Mayor - Pam Frisella, FC Superintendent Manny Hernandez, and a host of City Officials, FCTC members, and the public, cut the ceremonial ribbon declaring open the new home site of the FCTC. The FCTC will base most major events and activities at the Edgewater courts.

Our wonderful volunteers, coordinated by Olive Ebert, worked tirelessly and were very helpful. Players received tournament t-shirts/tank tops, bottled water, and fruit, and for the first time ever, competed with Penn balls printed with our own tournament logo! Jeremy Pickett, our head chef, ran the Club BBQ on Saturday. Our USTA Officials, Wendy Chow (Head Referee) and her umpire staff Shaun Lanihan and Terri Fitzmaurice were outstanding.

Gust Zumas did his usual great job managing the Edgewater courts, while Karen Chew and George Porzio kept Friday organized at Boothbay. Richard Olson, Jim Bjorge and Janet Adams handled Saturday.

The FCTC Board of Directors showed up in force during the entire event lending help where needed. Vikki, Mona, Ken, Scarlett, and our prez Barby where seen sweeping off the courts, icing down water, getting balls ready, and running from site to site!

Other volunteers included Liz, Madelon, Dora, and Mieko who helped run the show! A special thanks is due Judy Olson for her years of experience, and her patience with the new tournament director who was learning the ropes!

Competition ran well throughout the tournament with minimal delays or complaints. Winners and finalists received engraved wine glasses. We installed nine new ‘Scor-Post’ court scoring counters to keep games on track.

Our goal next year is to increase the early marketing and communication to encourage a greater number of participants, and continue the long successful history of the Peninsula Challenge Cup!

Thank You to the Volunteers ...

by Dale Russell, PCC Director

We survived another 3-day PCC! Hurray!!!

I want to graciously thank and congratulate all the FCTC Volunteers for their long hours and personal effort in making the 2007 Peninsula Challenge Cup a grand success! I have received many compliments that our tournament ran smoothly, and that our volunteer staff was very friendly and helpful.

Our success is attributed to your outstanding work as great volunteers! All your many hands of help made my role much easier.

I also want to personally thank Judy Olson for her years as PCC Tournament Director and for guiding me through this year's event! She has set the high goals players expect in a well run, friendly, successful tournament.

Thanks also to Kevin Miller and Todd Badger, our Foster City Officials, who provide the wonderful venue for our tournament.

I have probably missed a few folks that helped out too. Please thank them for their help and support.

Thanks again for your contribution to the 2007 PCC!
